Description:This course provides a general introduction to the study of adolescent psychology by presenting current issues, theories, research, and methodology in the field. Topics include an overview of physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development in adolescence. In addition, an introduction to disorders, contemporary perspectives on the etiology of disorders, as well as assessment and treatment of various disorders will be presented.

Course Objectives

"To gain a deeper understanding of the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development of adolescents and the multiplicity of factors that influence their development in each of these areas
"To use the major psychological approaches such as the biological, psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and ecological theories to help understand adolescents.
"To understand the complexity of adolescents in the contexts of their families, peer relationships, schools, and cultures.
"To explore the significance of achievement, career development, and work in the growth and development of adolescents.
"To understand the possible causal factors, effects, prevention, and treatment strategies for dealing with psychological problem such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and juvenile delinquency which may have an onset during adolescence.
"To find empowering ways of relating to adolescents that support, encourage, and challenge them in healthy ways to gain self-esteem and develop their potential.
