Name:Professional Writing in Psychology
Description:In this professional preparation course students apply and enhance the skills in research, analysis, and communication (both written and oral) acquired in their first-year courses. Students learn how to read, analyze, and summarize psychological research, and they develop proficiency in creating, editing, and presenting the results of their own research. After an introduction to writing and editing scientific empirical research reports, the course focuses on skills crucial to success in PY221 Experimental Design and Analysis 1. Through both writing assignments and brief presentations, students learn how to plan, research, organize, and document/present a literature summary and a research proposal.

Course Objectives

In this course, students: A. Demonstrate an understanding of the form and content requirements of three genres of scientific writing: the report, the literature review, and the research proposal; B. Demonstrate the ability to locate, analyze, summarize, and critique current research in the field of psychology; C. Understand and practice various methods for communicating complex scientific content; D. Develop proficiency in writing concisely and precisely; and E. Develop skills in designing and delivering presentations for both expert and non-expert audiences.
