Description:This course considers some of the primary themes of ethics, such as the nature of goodness, individual rights and social responsibility, relativism vs. absolutism, sources of ethical systems and moral behavior, and the value of right behavior in both private and public realms.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the major Western ethical theories. 2. Recognize ethical issues in current events, popular culture, and individual experience. 3. Demonstrate the ability to function in a cooperative group engaged in ethical analysis of a controversial issue. 4. Discuss, interpret, and apply the concepts and arguments associated with major ethical issues. 5. Apply, explain, and evaluate the appropriateness of several paradigms for making ethical choices and values decisions. 6. Think reflectively and critically about ethical issues and develop sensitivity to opinions different from their own.
