Description:This course acquaints students with writers, texts, historical background, and philosophies (such as transcendentalism) of the American Romanticism and Realism literary periods. Issues of culture (class, race, gender, religion, nature, war, work, marriage, morality, and ethics) are explored through close readings of texts, written response, creative writing, and class discussion. Featured readings include short stories by Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, and Crane; essays by Emerson and Thoreau; poems by Whitman and Dickinson; slave narratives by African Americans; and novels by Wharton and Chopin.

Course Objectives

Students will: 1. Become acquainted with a variety of writers of the American Romanticism and Realism literary periods 2. Read novels, short stories, essays, and poems 3. Understand the elements of Gothic literature 4. Learn the key principles of Transcendentalism 5. Learn the key concepts of Naturalism 6. Identify how politics inform the literature of that time period 7. Learn about social trends and social movements of that time period 8. Understand how class, race, and gender inform the literature of that time period 9. Learn key elements of literature (theme, character, symbolism, etc.) and 10. acquire skills in reading, writing, and speaking about literature--analysis, interpretation, critique, intertextuality, synthesis, research, and MLA format 11. Craft several creative writing projects in which elements of American Romanticism and Realism literature are applied 12. Engage in meaningful dialogue
