Description:This course helps student gain a more compassionate and practical understanding of people who suffer from a variety of psychological problems. Using case studies, video clips, lectures, and group work, students study the causal factors, symptoms, and possible treatments for such psychological problems as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, developmental disorders, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, dementia and Alzheimer’s. Finally, the course seeks to provide information on coping and staying psychologically healthy.

Course Objectives

1. To gain a more compassionate understanding of people who suffer from psychological problems. 2. To gain a practical understanding of how psychological problems are classified and assessed. 3. To understand theories of causal factors and treatment possibilities according to psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and biomedical theories. 4. To gain a deeper understanding of psychological problems such as alcoholism, addictions, anxiety, mood, dissociative, somatoform, personality disorders, and schizophrenia and how they affect people. 5. To gain a better understanding of psychological problems during the life span. 6. To understand developmental disorders and mental retardation. 7. To understand how we might attempt to cope with stress to stay healthy.
