Description:This course provides a general introduction to the study of child psychology by presenting current issues, theories, research, and methodology in the field of child psychology. Topics include an overview of physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development in infancy and early childhood. In addition, an introduction to disorders, contemporary perspectives on the etiology of disorders, as well as assessment and treatment of various disorders will be presented.

Course Objectives

"To gain a practical understanding of how children develop physically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and morally.
"To be able to apply psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and biological theories to understand child development and behavior.
To understand the genetic and biological processes as well as prenatal influences that may predispose children to certain problems or ways of developing.
To learn healthy and empowering ways of interacting with children.
To better understand the challenges and problems children face as they develop so we can provide better encouragement and guidance.
"To learn some basic skills in play therapy and art therapy that can be used to help children express themselves, process their concerns, and help them cope with the challenges of life in healthy ways.
"To develop a deeper appreciation, empathy, respect, and compassion for children and how they develop and understand life.
