Description: | This project based course asks students to review fractions, percentages, decimals, word problems, linear functions (creating, graphing, and interpreting) and other mathematical concepts typically encountered in everyday life. Students will also apply basic concepts of algebra in the context of spreadsheet modeling. Most problems will require students to obtain real data from Internet sources and to use that data to address real applied problems. Students will use Excel 2007 as the primary vehicle of analysis with students verifying some elements of their solutions using hand calculations and others using alternative spreadsheet models. Students will be expected to create and deliver presentations of their work using PowerPoint 2007. |

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1) Review basic techniques in mathematics and algebra in the context of applied problems. 2) Apply and interpret basic mathematical concepts in the context of real applications. 3) Use the same spreadsheet model development used by practitioners. 4) Apply basic mathematical theory to improve common technological approaches to problem solving by creating and comparing more efficient alternative spreadsheet models. 5) Present and interpret mathematical results by creating and presenting PowerPoint presentations. 6) Know how technology enhances the process of verifying a solution and discussing results. 7) Know the importance of assessing the accuracy of information obtained from Internet sources. |
