Description:This course provides an in-depth look at modern capital markets and the related role of financial intermediaries. The course considers both domestic and international sources of capital, including recent innovations in equity and debt markets. Short and long-term debt is introduced through an examination of rating methodologies and agencies, risk analysis, asset leverage, cost of capital, yield curve analysis and other related tools. Corporate and government bond markets are thoroughly explored. Equity market analysis includes strategies for equity capital acquisition as well as an in-depth look at stock markets, stock market indices, and advanced methods of dealing with market instability. Emphasis is placed on electronic market platforms.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of FN585, Capital Markets, students will understand, demonstrate proficiency in, and be able to: • Participate in international capital markets (1, 4) • Articulate the role of investment banks and commercial banks in capital acquisition (1, 4, 7) • Acquire equity capital in equity markets and debt financing in bond markets (1, 4) • Practice strategic management of retained earnings and other financial assets (1, 2) • Formulate capital acquisition strategy for public, non-profit, and private entities. (1, 2, 4) • Engage in the use of financial instruments, including options, forward and future contracts, swaps, and derivatives, among others (1, 2) • Use electronic market platforms (1, 4, 6)
