Description:Shakespeare was the brightest star among a galaxy of shining writers in what many see as the greatest period of English literature. Along with Wyatt, Spenser, Marlowe, Donne, Jonson, and others, Shakespeare explored love, sex, violence, political power, family relationships, war, the depths of human psychology, the ghost world. . . . This course aims to capture the spirit of this bold new age through discussion and analysis of representative literary works and also includes at least one filmed and one live version of a play (if possible), along with student staging and performance of short scenes.

Course Objectives

In this course we?ll read Shakespeare, think Shakespeare, scrutinize Shakespeare, discuss Shakespeare, and dream Shakespeare, with one main goal: to enjoy Shakespeare. Along the way, we?ll try to: appreciate why these plays are supposedly some of the greatest pieces of literature ever written (Core Competency III, Critical Thinking, Analytical Reasoning, and Problem-Solving) improve our reading perspective (Core Competency III); grasp the essentials of drama (Core Competency III); connect our lives to drama and the five plays we read (Core Competency III); improve our ability to articulate our ideas and feelings (Core Competency I, Communication); better understand film technique (Core Competency III); stimulate our general interest in literature and film, and in all things intellectual (Core Competencies III and IV Community and Interpersonal Relations.
